The Man Dressed in Blue
The one everybody stepped around.
I saw him by the morning glass
Where all the hurried faces pass
His coat was torn, his eyes were clear
Like he had slowly disappeared
He held the cold inside his hands
Beside the shoes of a better man
And no one moved, and no one stared
They only stepped around him there
Oh, we looked through
The man dressed in blue
We saw the man
But we don' understand
He wore the rain like it was skin
A paper cup, a quiet grin
The city spoke in car alarms
He lay there with heavy arms
A thousand names went rushing by
With coffee breath and lowered eyes
He said no word, he made no sound
And still he filled the whole way down
Oh, we looked through
The man dressed in blue
We saw the man
But we don' understand
At night he turned away from light
And folded into black and white
A shadow where a man had been
A human shape we painted thin
And I don’t know who lost him first
The empty room, the job, the hurt
But I know this, and nothing more
We made him pavement, dust, and door
Oh, we looked through
The man dressed in blue
We saw the man
But we don' understand
Oh, we looked through
The man dressed in blue
We saw the man
But we don' understand
